FALLAS – The traditional Valencian festival of Saint Joseph the carpenter. Originally a contest amongst carpenters to create an effigy of the Saint, it has escalated to become one of the most spectacular fiestas of the calendar year, with municipal districts competing for the prize for the best papier mache monument. Each year the monuments get bigger and better with more and more money invested in creating incredible 50-100ft high Disney-type cartoon depictions of both current event and political characters together with fictional figures. Hundreds of thousands of Euros are spent each year in building these monuments which are all burnt in the final ceremonial act of the celebrations. Festivities include, processions with participants wearing elaborate traditional costumes, street entertainment, fireworks and live music. The largest fiesta of this kind is held in the city of Valencia, where up to 300 massive monuments block the busy streets of the capital and commercial life comes to a halt. Here a 150ft high statue of the Virgen Mary is built out of flowers brought by participants of a day long procession through the city streets. This is a fiesta you will never forget.

BULL-RUNNING
The famous bull running event is held in many towns at different times of the year all over Spain. Large, generally aggressive bulls are let loose in designated streets to chase after those who think they are fast enough to jump out of their way, run behind the many wooden barricades or into the steel cages set up for their protection, before they get gored. Not for the faint hearted, and definitely best left to those with more experience as it is not as easy as it looks. The bulls are very fast and many people – usually foreigners – get hurt, and occasionally killed each year due to them tripping and falling before they manage to get to safety. These bulls have large horns, and will attack through fear. Hundreds of people attend the events, sitting upon makeshift platforms above the streets or standing within the steel cages. It can become rather noisy with everyone shouting and jeering at the bulls who naturally feel trapped and we all know how a cornered wild animal reacts to this kind of situation. The bull-running in Denia is held at the harbour where there is a small half bullring. Without touching the bulls, people try to throw them into the sea or jump in themselves to escape the bull. The bull is then guided out via a ramp.

AUGUST 14th – 16th
Moors and Christians Fiesta. – This festival is celebrated all over Spain as their history is deeply rooted in the battles which took place over control of Spain in the 13th to 15th century. Each fiesta is a theatrical performance with participants dressed in elaborate and expensive costumes depicting both sides of the battle. The music played by the live orchestras is especially composed for the fiesta and is very dramatic. Battles are re-enacted using replicas of the weapons used so it can become a little noisy.

Fiesta of San Agustin – Les Rotes area of Denia.

Spanish Car Tax Now Due

For those of you who are Spanish car owners Friday 25th March is the day for publishing car tax. You then have until 6th June to pay it. If you have bought a car in the last 12 months the tax bill will be posted to the address the car is registered to. You must then take it to a bank that collaborates with the town hall and pay it in cash. If you have an account in one of these banks you can pay it from your account. Once you have the receipt of payment in your name you can then go to the Tesoro office in Calle Mayor and set up a standing order from your bank account for the following years.

Legendary Moli Blanc to Re open in Javea

During the ‘70’s the Molí Blanc garden nightclub/disco was top of its league. The German National newspaper Der Spiegel called it the “best disco in Europe”. It was innovative with barbeques in the garden, 10 bars, four different music tracks, bow-tied waiters and “A-list” clientele. Every Saturday the place hosted 2000 people. Then it changed hands and closed it doors in 2006. The building and garden fell to rack and ruin. But now it has been taken over by the “Rich Club de Valencia ” which is franticly refurbishing it ready for a re-opening on June 18th. The idea is to recall the “Old Molí” atmosphere one day a week. (Note: They are installing short range speakers, so that the sound does not disturb the neighbours)

Jellyfish sightings in Denia and Javea

Denia|Jellyfish Scare

A jellyfish which is not common in the Mediterranean ,has been sited in Denia on the Costa Blanca,The jellyfish is normally found in the Caribbean or the Pacific. It was first seen in the Med in 1878 and has been sited regularly since then but not in large numbers.

Carybdea marsupialis is quite a small creature but it does have long tentacles and like most of these creatures can produce multiple stings, which are extremely painful.

In 2008 they were seen in Denia and it is thought that they were responsible for almost 2000 people requesting help from the Red Cross for treatment for jellyfish stings.Marine biologists from Alicante university have been studying them and think that Denia is their choice of habitat because of the low salinity caused by the rivers running into the sea. However there are masses of rivers running into the sea on the Costa Blanca and there don´t seem to be as many reports of this particular jellyfish.

The Mayor of Denia is not too happy about the publicity surrounding this creature as they feel that it could put tourists off visiting their beaches. At the moment this is just one specimen on El Raset beach.Fishermen have not reported that others have been seen off the coast.

Red Cross Improvements

Beach surveillance starts with new facilities
The Red Cross has started its beach surveillance with improved rescue stations, a kayak to patrol the buoy area of Benissero beach and a look-out chair in Granadella. Equipment also includes two boats, a jet ski, two ambulances and a vehicle to help the disabled to move up the beach. The team will consist of 42 life guards and ancillaries. Until June 15th daily surveillance will cover the Arenal, while la Grava and Granadella will be covered at weekends. For the rest of June there will be daily coverage of all three beaches from 11.00 am till 7.00pm. During July and August the times at Arenal will be extended to 10.00am till 8.00pm

Javea Town Hall Getting Tough

Javea town council have begun to enforce strongly local licensing laws and dealing with denuncias. Recently land was cleared in front of Las Olas Urbanisation on Carretera Cabo la Nao. This area was then fenced and a porta-cabin installed as an office for a construction materials company.

They displayed their hours and after an opening party began business last month. This was convenient for builders who no longer needed to cross the town for supplies.

However the residents of las Olas Urbanisation put in a denuncia to the town council and last week the area was sealed by local police as it seems it did not have the correct paperwork and licences. The owner has now decided to close the yard and this week has been removing supplies of bricks, sand etc to another location.

Although it is nice to see the town hall finally taking action it is surprising that, with this so visible on a main road, they had not stepped in earlier and saved the residents of Las Olas the inconvenience and the owner money.
